Identifying the cause of venous thromboses is an integral part of the successful treatment and prevention of recurring VT, as well as an important aspect of a comprehensive VT management plan. Any promising approach to treatment thus focuses on avoiding or removing triggering risk factors (for example, blood clotting disorders, lack of movement, oral contraceptives).

A conservative approach to treating VT includes compression therapy and immediate medication therapy with blood thinners. Surgery is required only in rare cases.
